Dr Mark Johnston, arboriculture course leader at Myerscough College, is to receive the International Society of Arboriculture's highest honour, the Award of Merit.

Dr Mark Johnston will receive the award at a ceremony in Providence, Rhode Island, US, in late July.

"I'm really thrilled," he said. "If you look at past winners of the award, it's a 'who's who' of international arboriculture."

Dr Mark Johnston is believed to be the first British winner of the award.

He won an MBE last year and is best known as author of Trees in Towns II, a study of urban trees and tree management.

The tree expert is a Fellow of the Arboricultural Association, a Chartered Forester and member of the Institute of Horticulture. He has more than 30 years' experience in the arboriculture and forestry industries, including working as a contractor, a tree officer in local government and a consultant in private practice.
