If you have ever had to take down or prune out a tree, you know very well how expensive it can get. The concerns are, how much is this going to cost you, and if you are going to get a fair price.

I recently spoke to Ben the Owner of Carolina Christian Climbers, a small tree care company, here in Charlotte. I wanted to find out how he went about pricing a tree job. Come to find out there is a formula or sorts. I was excited to get this information, which will clear up the mystery, of how to get an idea of how much it will cost you to get tree work done. Here is the formula:

A small tree would be about 1/4 to 1 foot around and up to 25 feet tall. If you have a small tree 25 feet tall, the price would be around $8.00 a foot. Multiply 25 feet times $8.00 and the cost of the tree removal would be about $200.

Dr Mark Johnston, arboriculture course leader at Myerscough College, is to receive the International Society of Arboriculture's highest honour, the Award of Merit.

Dr Mark Johnston will receive the award at a ceremony in Providence, Rhode Island, US, in late July.

"I'm really thrilled," he said. "If you look at past winners of the award, it's a 'who's who' of international arboriculture."

Dr Mark Johnston is believed to be the first British winner of the award.

He won an MBE last year and is best known as author of Trees in Towns II, a study of urban trees and tree management.

The tree expert is a Fellow of the Arboricultural Association, a Chartered Forester and member of the Institute of Horticulture. He has more than 30 years' experience in the arboriculture and forestry industries, including working as a contractor, a tree officer in local government and a consultant in private practice.

11th Arborists' Trade Fair: Exhibitors display latest kit for dealing with green waste

Horticulture Week

Organisers of this year's Arborists' Trade Fair say it will have more of a focus on "green-waste solutions".

Arboricultural Association director Nick Eden said: "People are not just looking for woodchippers. They also want log splitters and mobile saw mills. There's an awareness that too much material is simply being wasted."

Perry Plant Hire is promoting BGU machinery from Germany. This machinery can be used for producing kindling wood as well as shredding and bundling wood. Hardmet is also showing ranges of towable chipping and shredding machines, while GreenMech is also featuring a range of tracked chippers and shredders.

Because of high fuel costs, there is obviously more interest in using arboricultural arisings for fuel. Boomeco Biomass will be promoting its services, selling green waste to the biomass and amenity markets. The firm claims that it can boost the profits of arborists by paying money for their waste products.
