For those wishing to learn more about horticulture, and wish to give back to the community, a Master Gardener class will be offered starting in September.
The Master Gardener Program is a volunteer management and outreach program of the Cooperative Extension Service. The classes begin Sept. 1 and will run until mid-December, meeting every Tuesday morning from 9 a.m. until noon. Each class will focus on a different horticultural topic, ranging from flowers to insects to pesticide management. While I will teach several of the classes, there will be several guest lecturers. Attendance is mandatory. Within the first year of the program, it is required to do 30 hours of community service. Volunteer hours can include anything from weeding to helping teach horticulture classes in the community.
Master Gardeners from the class of 2008 helped with the fair, maintained historic gardens throughout the county and organized a garden tour.
The cost of this opportunity will be $100, which will include the Master Gardener Manual produced by the University of Kentucky, as well as some supplemental guides. The class size is limited to 20 and membership will be on a first-come, first-served basis. A waiting list will be formed for those interested who are not able to be in this year’s class.
