Floriculture export can earn huge revenues

ISLAMABAD (APP) - Pakistan has a lot of potential to develop floriculture, but lack of attention by the concerned authorities has prevented growth in this sector, a leading researcher and exporter said on Monday.

"The market demand of floriculture products is growing fast. The worldwide trade with more than 10 countries dominating the business. There is a constant increase in its acreage under various flower crops" said by Chief Executive Officer Harvest Tradings Ahmad Jawad in a statement issued here Monday.

Ahmad Jawad said that Pakistan is a country of small farming households, where floriculture is the best option to enhance the income for the poor.

"We have favorable climate and cheap labour for growing these crops. They need much less land and water for production than other crops," he said.

Net profit against the investment is much higher for these crops compared with other conventional crops, he said. The products are in high demand all over the world, he added.

Horticulture Dept Organizes Growers Tour Program


Srinagar, India Nov 19: Seeking to promote private floriculture business in the Valley, the Floriculture Department Kashmir organized a two-day µtour program of growers.

Sheikh Shabir Ahmad, District Floriculture Officer, Srinagar told Greater Kashmir that the program facilitated interaction between growers from Srinagar with their professional counterparts in other districts of J&K.

“The objective of the programme was to boost private floriculture business,” Ahmad added. He said the registered growers from Srinagar district during the program shared their experiences with and learned from their professional counterparts from other districts. He said the visit was conducted under centrally Sponsored Scheme RKVY on Nov 18 and 19. He said the department acted as a facilitator.

Unusual duel of blooms & bees - Horticulture and honey mission cross swords over pesticide use

Kohima/New Delhi: It is a strange duel in India’s Northeast — between organic honeybees and inorganic flowers — that threatens the “organic label” and exposes the growing rural-urban divide.

On the one hand, is a small village on the Myanmar border that is a model for exploiting a multi-crore rupee honey market abroad.
Away in the big towns of Nagaland, the rich and famous want capital-intensive floriculture to be the mainstay for the state.

North Central Missouri Fair - Floral Competition

The Grand River Garden Club will host the floriculture department portion of the North Central Missouri Fair on Thursday, Aug. 6, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Entries may be brought to the Rock Barn from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Judging divisions include container-grown plants, branches, herbs, shrubs, bulbs and tubers. Vases are available to display cut specimens in both the annual and perennial varieties. Roses of all types are also sought for the show and there is a separate category for arrangements in design.

The persons associated with this field are called floriculturists.

Karnataka is the leader in floriculture, accounting for 75% of India's total flower production. The employment opportunities in this field are as varied as the nature of work itself. One can join the field of floriculture as farm/estate managers, plantation experts and supervisors, project coordinators etc. Research and teaching are some other avenues of employment in the field. First export-oriented floriculture project to start next year

KARACHI: The first of its kind technology based pilot project in floriculture will start commissioning in mid 2010, Pakistan Horticulture Development Export Board (PHDEB) said on Tuesday.

“The aim is to promote export oriented flowers industry for earning millions of dollars per annum by increasing export to UAE, Saudi Arabia and European Union beside others” chief executive officer PHDEB, Shamoon Sadiq said while talking to Daily Times.

The future of agriculture in Haryana is surely bright, Hooda quipped. The government has been encouraging farmers to diversify and adopt horticulture in a big way. It has already become lucrative as horticultural crops give more returns per unit area and require less water for irrigation than wheat, paddy and other cereal crops. Fruit plantations, floriculture, hybrid vegetables, mushroom cultivation, bee-keeping (apiculture) and fish farming are steadily attracting farmers, entrepreneurs, investors and businessmen in the State.

Haryana is fast emerging as a horticultural State: it stands fifth in cauliflower production, sixth in pea production, seventh in cabbage, onion, tomato and okra production, ninth in brinjal production and 10th in potato production. Read more>

A career in Flowers: Floriculture

Does a bouquet of bright, red roses make you happy? Do you like to decorate your home with flowers? Or just plain love flowers? The how about making a career with flowers and plants? Be a floriculturist.

Floriculture first took birth in England about two centuries before where flowers were grown in large estates for commercial reasons. Soon it was taken up seriously by many other countries as well. The floral industry today has grown by leaps and bounds and includes various other aspects other than growing flowers. In India, Floriculture industry comprises flower trade, production of nursery plants and potted plants, seed and bulb production, and extraction of essential oils. The industry is growing at the rate of 25% a year. Still the field is under explored. Read more>

Horticulture on commercial cultivation of floriculture

The commercial cultivation of floriculture which started during 2004-05, was further extended during 2008-09, covering an area of 5.0 ha. under green house cultivation. Besides roses, lilium and anthurium and heliconia, some new varieties of flowers were introduced during the current year which are alstroemeria and zantedeschia benefiting about 200 groups of entrepreneurs, according to the annual administrative report of the horticulture department. Currently, the report said, there are about 50.0 ha. under commercial floriculture of which about 30.0 ha. are of Hi-Tech and 20.0 ha under open field. Cultivation of flowers have created alternative and lucrative employment to a good number of people in the state, the report said adding that during the current year, the gross sales of flowers have crossed Rs. 2.00 crores. Appreciating the good quality of flowers in the state, a number of both national and international awards have been bagged by the department. A feather in the cap for the state was the request made by the Teen Murti House, New Delhi, to cerebrate the birthday of Pandit Jawarhar Lal Nehru, by using flowers from Nagaland during November 14, 2008, the report added.
