Missouri: Get free six-week training to teach Eating from the Garden curriculum

Classes are coming up for nutrition and gardening enthusiasts who want to teach the Eating from the Garden curriculum at local schools and community centers.

The free six-week training sessions will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on:

• Aug. 12 and Aug. 19 at the MU Extension Center at Pioneer Community College, 2700 E. 18th St.
• Aug. 26 and Sept. 2 at Kansas City Community Gardens, 6917 Kensington Ave.
• Sept. 9 and Sept. 16 at the MU Extension Center, 1106 W. Main St., Blue Springs

Volunteers will receive university training in nutrition, food safety, food preparation, fruit and vegetable production, use of natural fertilizers, pest control and other practical gardening skills.

Once trained, the volunteers teach lessons in nutrition, plant science, hands-on gardening and environmental awareness to encourage fourth and fifth grade children to eat more fruits and vegetables. They also help community groups establish fruit and vegetable gardens.

North Central Missouri Fair - Floral Competition

The Grand River Garden Club will host the floriculture department portion of the North Central Missouri Fair on Thursday, Aug. 6, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Entries may be brought to the Rock Barn from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Judging divisions include container-grown plants, branches, herbs, shrubs, bulbs and tubers. Vases are available to display cut specimens in both the annual and perennial varieties. Roses of all types are also sought for the show and there is a separate category for arrangements in design.

Missouri: Master Gardener program open to anyone with interest in gardening

Have you ever wondered what a Master Gardener really is? Is it just an expert gardener? How would you like to be one yourself?

Master Gardeners are simply people who have participated in the Master Gardener volunteer program through MU Extension. Masters volunteer their time and talents in their communities, offering up-to-date horticulture information and gardening help. Some are novice gardeners, some are veterans of gardening, some of them live in the country and others live in town condos, but all share one thing in common: a love for gardening.

Missouri: Vegetable Tour of Heartland

KIRKSVILLE, MO -- The University of Missouri Extension and the Missouri Vegetable Growers Association will sponsor a tour of Amish vegetable farms and the wholesale auction in Drakesville, Iowa on July 31. The Greene County Master Gardeners have established an annual scholarship for students that are living in southwest Missouri, are majoring or minoring in horticulture and are enrolled at a Missouri college or university. The $500, one-year scholarship is named in honor of Gaylord Moore, a retired horticulture specialist with University of Missouri Extension, the extention office said in a news release. Read more:

Henry Shaw, only 18, was selling cutlery out of a rented room in St. Louis when a chance, half-day journey out of town on horseback one spring day in 1819 led him to his destiny — the prairie that would become his now-world-famous garden.
