Jackson Township, Ohio - Annual Horticulture Holiday Show

A decades old traditin , the annual Jackson High School Horticulture Holiday Show will take place on Monday, November 21. This year's show will offer holiday wreaths, plants and poinsettias for sale, made and grown by the students of the high school's Horticulture class. Prices for the poinsettias will be $6.50 and the wreaths are priced from $26 to $40.

The horticulture class is a career tech program at  Jackson High School. Students can work towards greenhouse technician, florist or landscape and nursery certifications. Plus, they receive 12 credit hours that transfer to higher education providers.

USDA Expands People's Garden Initiative to Sow Seeds for Community-Based Agriculture across the Country

WASHINGTON, Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan visited a community garden in Baltimore to announce 10 grants to support 155 People's Gardens in neighborhoods from Maryland to Hawaii, continuing the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) efforts to combat malnutrition while supporting local and regional food systems. These sustainable community gardens will give residents direct access to fresh fruits and vegetables in underserved neighborhoods. A lack of access to fresh and nutritious food fuels obesity and domestic food insecurity—a condition where households experience limited or uncertain access to adequate food.

"The simple act of planting a garden can help unite neighborhoods around a common effort and inspire communities to find solutions to challenges facing our country—from hunger to the environment," said Merrigan. "The People's Garden Initiative has demonstrated that one direct and effective way of improving food access is to plant a garden. Since establishing our People's Garden Initiative, we're excited to see more and more people working together to create nurturing communities around these sources of nutritious food."

Ohio: Horticulture Show at Davis Center

YOUNGSTOWN — The Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown will sponsor the 43rd annual Horticulture Show on Aug. 22 and 23 at the Davis Center at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park.

The event allows local growers the opportunity to exhibit their prized plantings, have them judged by experienced gardeners, and see what their fellow gardeners have done this year.
The event is free and open to the public. It will feature fourteen judging categories ranging from fruits and vegetables to perennials and potted plants. Spectators are also welcome after the judging has been completed.

Colored ribbons will be awarded for first, second and third places, and honorable mention, the main focus of the show is education. There are special categories for those age 16 and under.

Ohio: Floral Photograhpy Exhibit

Over 125 photographs by photograher Susan Miller Cormier are currently on exibit at the Wassenber Art Center. The exhibit provides a perspective of nature and natural objects as reflected in her original photographs on display.

Ohio: Flower show set at Thompson Park

EAST LIVERPOOL - Members of the East Liverpool-Calcutta Area Garden Club are ready for today's flower show at Thompson Park. "In the past, we've had events that were more about showing flowers and the various competitions," club member Kathy Helman said. "This year, we wanted it to be more of a community event." The theme of this year's flower show is "Thompson Park: A Celebration." Some of the displays will include elements from the theme. Flower entries are accepted from 8-10 a.m. today and judging takes place soon after. The event is open to the public starting at noon and ends at 4 p.m. Read more>

SWCD searching for largest white oak tree in Pike County

In an effort to encourage landowners and others interested in trees, the Pike Soil and Water Conservation District is conducting a contest in search of the largest white oak tree in Pike County.

On a statewide basis, the Ohio Division of Forestry, in cooperation with the International Paper Co., conducts the state Big Tree Program. According to the division, the national Big Tree Registry of 826 big trees is maintained by American Forests, a conservation organization based in Washington, D.C.

On the local level, the goal of the district's program is to engage individuals with an interest in Ohio's forest resource in the search of the largest white oak tree, and to reward the individual who finds the largest specimen of this particular species.
