Minnesota state tree nurseries phase out historic seedling program

Willow River, Minn. — Minnesota's two tree nurseries are preparing to phase out much of their seedling production, work they've been doing since the Great Depression.
Although the state nurseries run by the Department of Natural Resources recently celebrated their billionth tree planted, the Legislature directed them to stop selling to private buyers. That worries customers, who fear that private nurseries may not step up to fill the void.

Minnesota: Horticultural Evening set at Legacy Gardens

Living Legacy Gardens at Central Lakes Agricultural Center in Staples will host a Horticulture Evening on Aug. 13.

Garden-related workshops and walking tours are offered and vendors will be on hand to display and discuss products and services. There will be a silent auction. A meal will be served at 4:45 p.m.Educational workshops offered from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Cloquet Forestry Center celebrates centennial | Duluth News Tribune | Duluth, Minnesota

After the Northland's great red and white pines were felled by timber barons, university and conservation leaders realized Minnesota might need to figure out how to rehabilitate the forest. So 100 years ago, the University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center was formed. Now it's a sprawling, 3,500-acre managed forest and research center tucked away off Carlton County back roads.
