Horticulture on commercial cultivation of floriculture

The commercial cultivation of floriculture which started during 2004-05, was further extended during 2008-09, covering an area of 5.0 ha. under green house cultivation. Besides roses, lilium and anthurium and heliconia, some new varieties of flowers were introduced during the current year which are alstroemeria and zantedeschia benefiting about 200 groups of entrepreneurs, according to the annual administrative report of the horticulture department. Currently, the report said, there are about 50.0 ha. under commercial floriculture of which about 30.0 ha. are of Hi-Tech and 20.0 ha under open field. Cultivation of flowers have created alternative and lucrative employment to a good number of people in the state, the report said adding that during the current year, the gross sales of flowers have crossed Rs. 2.00 crores. Appreciating the good quality of flowers in the state, a number of both national and international awards have been bagged by the department. A feather in the cap for the state was the request made by the Teen Murti House, New Delhi, to cerebrate the birthday of Pandit Jawarhar Lal Nehru, by using flowers from Nagaland during November 14, 2008, the report added.
