Key flowers make garden hum

Forget sugary syrup; Woodland couple demonstrate that right blooms lure hummingbirds

WOODLAND — When Noel Johnson was growing up on a Wisconsin farm almost 70 years ago, one of his cherished possessions was a pack of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda trading cards.The cards, procured by mailing in labels from the soda box, depicted birds indigenous to the region. Noel would dutifully scour the countryside trying to match the real thing to the pack of cards he carried in his pocket. "It was something you always could do," he said. "There was no TV."Today, Noel has a little easier time spotting his feathered friends than he did during those frigid Wisconsin winters as a young boy. Actually, his colorful flowers do most of the work. All Noel and his wife, Nancy, have to do is watch the action from outside their home on the North Fork of the Lewis River a mile from Woodland.
