Australia: New technology measuring thirsty crops
Farmers will soon know exactly how much water they need to grow specific crops with the installation of underground machines called lysimeters.Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries (QPIF) scientists led by Trevor Harris are researching the water requirements of various agricultural and horticultural crops at a number of sites throughout South East Queensland.According to the QPI&F, a lysimeter is made up of two rectangular boxes, one made to fit inside the other, with the inner box attached to a data logger by sensors.
