The Science of Making Horticulture Sexy

Horticulture Week
Kossoff on...
Business success. What it takes and how to get there.

I apologize for being the bearer of bad news, but in case you weren't aware, horticulture isn't sexy to the Government.

On the other hand, jobs and entrepreneurialism are very sexy to the Government. This one. The last one. Succeeding ones. This is the kind of sex appeal that just doesn't quit. It's timeless and timely. All the time.

The good news is: You've got it and it all comes from science. What it's going to take to realize the benefits, however, is for you to change how you see and talk about your industry.

The Save Our Science campaign focuses, rightly, on getting the Government to match funds - pound for pound - with what you're having to pay. Its purpose? To invest in the research and development the industry needs. Does anyone argue with the need for the funds? No. That's not the issue. It's what the Government thinks those funds are for.

At the moment, the kids at Defra (including their fearless leader Hillary Benn) want to play with the fun stuff. The sexy stuff. Like the environment. Climate change. Future technologies. So that's what they fund. It's globally visible, makes the country look like a front-runner in the world-changing department and leads to a lot of visits to interesting places.

Like I said. Fun.
