The next time you walk between City Hall and the Zeidler Municipal Building, you may notice two large raised beds surrounded by deer fencing.
The fencing is to keep the rabbits away from the vegetables.
That's right: Vegetables are growing beside City Hall, just off Market Street -- Milwaukee's own version of the White House kitchen garden planted by Michelle Obama and Washington, D.C. area schoolchildren on the White House lawn this spring.
The two beds of vegetables near City Hall are intended to inspire residents to plant vegetable gardens in their own neighborhoods. Oleszak, Sarah Christman (facility manager for the Milwaukee urban farm Growing Power) and Milwaukee Ald. Nik Kovac planted beans, eggplant and tomatoes in the demonstration garden Wednesday afternoon.
