Sydney: Organic gardeners can now look forward to a new, natural pest control thanks to an extract from the ginkgo biloba tree that has revealed its potential to act as an environmentally friendly pesticide. University of Waikato's biochemical engineering student Richard Gubb conducted the research under the supervision of Professor Alan Langdon and Dr. Giridhar Nair. Gubb said the ginkgo biloba was one of the oldest trees on Earth and was often referred to as a living fossil. One of the reasons for its longevity was its high resistance to pests, which was due to toxic compounds produced naturally by the tree. Lab tests have shown that snails have been repelled from eating lettuce leaves covered with ginkgo biloba extract. Gubb's study demonstrates the feasibility of using this organic extract as a natural pesticide.
