It's been a tough season with heavy rains followed by extreme heat. Good soil drainage was a major key this year and determined the success of vegetable production. Nematodes, diseases, insects and weeds may have all contributed to the demise of gardens coupled with the unusual weather.

Now is the time to pull out unhealthy and unproductive plants. Many gardeners take some time off and give the garden a much needed rest.

There are a few things you can do to improve the soil for the next gardening season. Two things to consider are soil solarization or planting a cover crop.
