The bright orange flowers that bloom along roadsides during the summer are the great-grandparents of the many hybridized day lilies now available. A couple main species have been around more than a thousand years, said Debbie Gray, who has a day lily business in Dorsey, north of Edwardsville.

Hybridizers have taken the versatile perennial to a whole new level. The easy-to-grow flower has a lot going for it. Peak blooming time: Used to be July 1, but it's getting earlier and earlier, said Debbie. The second week of June they start to pop and continue through August.

Michigan wildflowers and weeds - Daylily

This beautiful flower, the Common Orange Daylily,(Hemerocallis fulva ), is not native to North America. They are thought to be escaped hybrids of European or Asian daylilies that flourished here and at one point most rural Michigan roads were lined by what was fondly called Ditch lilies. This is somewhat remarkable because the Common Orange daylily is sterile and produces no fertile seeds. It spreads only by the root system, called a rhizome. But any gardener that has introduced these into a home garden can tell you that they spread rapidly and persistently this way
