Quest for a blue carnation

ROSES are red but carnations could one day be blue — that is if scientists manage to control the hue of one of the world's oldest-known cultivated flowers. Armed with a three-year, $100,000 grant from the Australian Research Council, La Trobe University plant biologist Tony Gendall hopes to crack the Holy Grail of floral engineering and produce blue carnations. Despite the challenges of this cool, damp growing season, two consecutive weekends of sunny skies have dramatically improved the outlook for our gardens and those who tend them. While our summer bloom season seems to be running a week or two behind, warmer temperatures and brilliant sunshine are quickly bringing the borders along to reveal their summertime splendor. Colorful perennials herald the start of summer

Bright sunshine, rising temperatures (and humidity), frequent thunderstorms and luxuriant growth have replaced spring's cool refreshing mornings and delicate wildflowers. By now, you're probably wading through that thick and luxuriant growth.

This is also the time of year when garden companions carefully planned to bloom during the summer in our perennial borders and woodland edges ignite the landscape. Summer's intense light and heat create the perfect conditions for an amazing array of bold flower colors and textures.

If you haven't done so, begin to explore some of the fine plants that help make the garden a focal point of interest in early summer.

Lompoc Pops kicks off Flower Festival on Monday

The Lompoc Pops Orchestra invites patrons and fans alike to attend its fourth and final concert of the season, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 22, at the First United Methodist Church, 925 North F St.

Tickets cost $15 for adults, and $5 for children 12 and younger and for all full-time students of all ages, with school ID.

In partnership with the Flower Festival, each year the Pops Orchestra schedules the concert to kick off the annual event. Entitled an evening of fun and fantasy, this year’s repertoire will include favorites from Disney movies alongside “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers,” “March of the Toys,” “Over the Rainbow” and a Gay Nineties Medley.
