Half a century ago almost 50 species of wildflowers would decorate a summer cornfield. The vivid blue of corncockle and the gold yellow of corn marigold glittered like a gem-strewn tapestry.
But decades of agri-chemicals have brought such delights to near-extinction. Species with old-world names like Venus’s looking-glass, weasel’s snout and shepherd’s needle – all worthy of salvation for their names alone – teeter on the brink of oblivion.
