With some moisture and cooler air working its way back into Houston today with the welcomed rains across the region, the time has come to move the focus away from just the sun-loving, drought-tolerant varieties. The dwarf Chenille Plant (Acalypha reptans) is a terrific and visually interesting ground cover or container plant for Houston, but it is no fan of drought or the late afternoon blazing sun. Also known as Red-Hot Cattail and Strawberry Firetails, the Chenille Plant prefers partial sun to full shade, and moist, slightly acidic soil.
